Title: Educational in Nature - Forests: A Forest is...
Description of Resource: The information provided in this pamphlet looks beyond just trees to carefully examine the real forest. It provides a basic understanding of several critical elements that comprise a forest such as; soil, water, sunlight, rain, insects, birds and, of course, trees. Several forest types are described. A real management scenario of a southern forest is presented including discussion of mature stands, young forest, streams, logging roads, wildlife, soil types, clearcutting, and tree and shrub diversity. The information provided also includes a classroom activity that uses maps and diagrams to help students design their own urban forest plan. Companion material highlights the relationship between birds and forests, focusing on habitat and food sources. Stencils provided allow students to draw a forest of their own. Materials are in full color and beautifully presented.
