Title: Tropical Deforestation - Uncovering the Story (Video/Curriculum)
Description of Resource: Presents a uniquely thought-provoking package for teachers on tropical deforestation. Uses the Minnesota K-12 Science Framework, which connects Research Council's National Science Education Standards and the Minnesota Graduation Standards, so that this curriculum can be used for teachers meeting education standards in all parts of the country. Also incorporates age-appropriate concepts from the American Association for the Advancement of Science's Benchmarks for Science Literacy, to provide a framework for teaching 7th and 8th graders (though with modification of the activities, can be used with children in 6th grade through high school). Uses a video and accompanying teacher's guide, complete with overhead masters and activities, to teach students about the large, multifaceted challenges involved in preserving tropical forests. Encourages critical thinking of the complex problems and possible solutions. Divides the video and written materials into 3 components: "Forests of the World" describes locations and differences between tropical and temperate rainforests, and how their preservation challenges differ. "What's Happening to Tropical Forests?"examines the environmental problems and causes of tropical deforestation. "Protecting and Using Forests" focuses on solving problems and considering local responses to the global crisis. For 7th and 8th grade teachers of science or other subjects examining tropical deforestation, such as social studies, geography, writing, and mathematics. With modification of activities, curriculum may also be used with 6th grade or high school students.
