Title: Tree Town
Description of Resource: This is the perfect way to make your units about plants, common animals, and communities come alive. Through the words of Jean Giono your students will learn to love planting trees while the Lorax teaches us about the importance of sustainability and the vital necessity for forest management. Within the eleven books (both children and references) your students will have the opportunity to identify trees, how to plant trees, what trees are best for your community, and how trees are used for wood and paper products. The several hands-on activities give students the chance to touch and view 31 North American wood species through hand lenses. In addition, included in the kit is Project Learning Trees Environmental Education Activity Guide and Ranger Rick Nature Scope: Trees are Terrific. These creative, educational curriculums are dedicated to inspiring children in understanding and appreciating one of our most precious natural resources, trees. Both curriculums incorporate some of the books and hands-on activities included. You can surround your students with trees from North America and the world by displaying the four colorful, detailed, laminated posters. When your class is ready to go out and plant trees, the two videos included in this kit will show exactly how to do it, from choosing the trees species, picking the site, and care. The video, It's Arbor Day Charlie Brown, demonstrates how children can better their community by working together and planting a garden or even a forest. Suggested for teaching grades K-2 or 3-5.
